Seventh NI Road Tragedy As Freeze Continues

Amid warnings that black ice had made many of Northern Ireland's roads treacherous this morning, a man has been killed in a car crash in Co Tyrone.

As officials warned that last night's freezing temperatures meant there was ice on untreated roads, making driving conditions very dangerous, the unnamed road victim was killed at about 5.30am this morning on the A29 road between Dungannon and Cookstown. A man and a woman were also taken to hospital after the crash, which didn't involve any other vehicle.

Their respective conditions are not thought to be life threatening.

The man's death has brought the number of people killed on Northern Ireland's roads so far this year to seven.

Meanwhile, treacherous road conditions were at worst around the Belfast and Lisburn areas earlier on Monday.

The NI Roads Service said salting was taking place on main roads, but particular care should be taken on minor untreated roads.

Temperatures had fallen to -3 C overnight and wintry showers had washed some of the grit off roads.

However, the rest of Monday is turning out to be dry and bright, after freezing fog lingered for some time this morning before clearing.

Meanwhile, five men were taken to hospital after a fire engine hit a telegraph pole in Dungannon - also on Monday morning.

It happened on the Derrycaw Road at about 7.30am.

None of the men are thought to have suffered serious injuries.
