Attempted abduction in County Tyrone

Detectives in County Tyrone are appealing for information, following an attempted abduction of a baby yesterday morning.

Just before 11am, a woman called to the family's home in the Westland Road South area of Cookstown, claiming to be a health visitor.

The woman picked up the five week old baby boy, and said that she had to get something from her car.

The child's mother then asked to see identification, and when the woman could not produce it, she was asked to leave.

She then made off in a silver coloured VolksWagon Golf car, which was driven by a younger man, believed to be in his 20's, with dark hair and of slim build.

The woman is described as being between 35 and 40-years-old, around 5' 2" in height, of heavy build - approximately a size 18, and with prominent teeth and shoulder length jet-black hair with a fringe, possibly a wig.

She was wearing large dark sunglasses, which she did not take off, with a long, straight black skirt and a white blouse.

Police have warned the public to be vigilant and to always ask for identification from anyone who calls to their homes, and to report anyone they feel may be suspicious.

Anyone who may have witnessed the attempted abduction, or who may have any information relating to it, to contact them on 0845 600 8000, or anonymously on 0800 555 111.
