Murder inquiry launched after body find

A murder inquiry has been launched after a body was recovered from the River Lagan in Lisburn last night.

Police began searching the area after "suspicious activity" was captured by CCTV cameras nearby. Blood was discovered near the river and the body was later found.

A man in his 30s has been arrested and is assisting police with their inquiries.

SDLP Lagan Valley assembly member Patricia Lewsley expressed her "shock" at the news.

"This morning's news is obviously very distressing for people in this area," she said.

"Divers are currently preparing to search the river but at this stage CCTV cameras at Lagan Island indicate that a body was disposed of in this horrific manner.

"If reports are proven true, this incident is going to cause much grief. Whoever this person is, they have friends and family who are going to be devastated by this news."
