Teenage girl discovers pipe bomb
A 13-year-old girl has discovered a pipe bomb in the laneway of her home near Ballymena.
The young girl, who did not realise what she had found, carried the primed pipe bomb into her home at around 6pm on Thursday evening. However, on seeing the suspicious object her older brother took the device out of the house.
Police who have appealed for information on the attack said that a sectarian motive remained a possibility.
SDLP councillor for the area Declan O'Loan said he was concerned about the incident outside the isolated farmhouse some two miles from Ballymena.
He said that the device had been found outside a Catholic home in a quiet rural area: "Luckily the fuse on the pipe bomb was unlit and no one was injured. Nonetheless this is a very serious matter. This lethal weapon had the potential to cause possibly fatal harm to a young child. There is no place in society for the type of people responsible for this malicious act."
Police warned that although the device was not lit, pipe bombs are notoriously sensitive and if it had exploded it could have caused serious injury.
Anyone finding a suspicious object has been warned not to handle it and to contact police immediately.
