Coleraine Councillors to replace 'disgraced' ex-mayor
Councillors in Coleraine are to hold a by-election to replace disgraced former DUP mayor Dessie Stewart.
The decision came after an incident yesterday, when Mr Stewart, who was appearing at Antrim Crown Court to be sentenced in connection with an electoral fraud case, allegedly assaulted a press photographer who was waiting outside the courthouse.
Mr Stewart was due to be sentenced after admitting to six counts of electoral fraud during the local government elections in 2005, however sentencing was put back until November 17.
During a meeting with Coleraine Council last night, a proposal by the SDLP to co-opt a new councillor was rejected, and an election in the Skerries area is expected to take place on December 13.

Almost £300,000 Lost To Ticket Fraud In 2023
People have been urged to be wary of scammers when booking concert and event tickets, after figures revealed that almost £300,000 was lost to ticket fraud in Northern Ireland in 2023. Data from Action Fraud shows nationally £6.7 million was lost to this type of crime. In Northern Ireland the total reported losses came in at £291,344.

£23.1m Lost To Fraud In NI In Last 13 Months
A total of £23.1 million has been lost to financial fraud in Northern Ireland in the last 13 months, according to the latest figures from Action Fraud. In the period before December 2022 and January 15 2024, the PSNI received 5,412 reports of fraud.

Scam Warning Issued Following Taylor Swift Ticket Fraud
The PSNI in Derry City & Strabane have warned people to be wary of scammers following a report this week of a person who thought they'd bought tickets online for a Taylor Swift concert only to find out they'd been swindled. According to police, it was reported that a person had found tickets for the concert on an online platform.
