Phab axes Independent Living division
Charity Phab (NI) has axed its struggling Independent Living subsidiary after admitting financial difficulties.
The centres are to be closed and parents were informed that the Phab (NI) Independent Living Day Care Centre in Cedar Avenue in Belfast would close.
The closures will affect around 40 staff who have been made redundant.
The charity blamed vandalism and escalating costs for the closure of the Independent Living centres.
A spokesperson said that every effort had been made to keep the centres open, but it had become clear on Monday evening that the current programme was not viable.
Independent Living targeted the needs of young people, with and without disabilities who were interested in living independently.
The first centre opened in 1988 and the charity said that over 700 young people had been assisted by the programme.
