Man arrested over Portstewart death

Man has been arrested following the discovery of a woman's body at a house in Co Londonderry.

The body of the 43-year-old mother-of-two, who has been named as Jillian Doherty, was discovered at around 3.45am this morning at Mill Road in Portstewart. It is believed she had been stabbed. Police have arrested a man in connection with the death.

While an ambulance was called to the scene of the incident, it is thought she was found dead at the scene.

SDLP assembly member for the area, John Dallat, described the death as a "terrible tragedy".

"My heart goes out to the two little boys who have lost their mother in the most awful of circumstances," he said.

"While the police have made an arrest it is still important for people to give the PSNI whatever assistance they can to construct a picture which up to this terrible tragedy."

Police are expected to carry out a forensic examination later today.

They have appealed to anyone with information to contact them.
