Policing Board receives report on future Police numbers

Members of the Northern Ireland Policing Board today received a report from the Northern Ireland Office outlining recommendations for the future staffing of the Police Service of Northern Ireland.

The report, entitled ‘20:20 Vision: A Value for Money Establishment Review of the PSNI Post 2010/11’ recommends that, after this date, the number of regular police officers should reduce, over time, to 6,028 from 7,500.

This figure is based on the assumption that there is ‘no reversal in the security environment and that normalisation continues’.

Commenting on the report, Policing Board Chairman, Professor Sir Desmond Rea, said:

“The Policing Board has received the report but Members have not yet had the opportunity to read it in detail. Members will critically examine every part of the report and will seek the views and assessment of the Chief Constable before responding in full to the NIO.

“The Board will also wish to hear the views of the Police Staff Associations and Trade Unions as it considers the report.”

Sir Desmond continued: “The Board will come to its own view on the report and will seek to ensure that there are sufficient resources to ensure an effective and efficient police service in Northern Ireland.”
