Man remanded over Belfast murder

A 42-year-old man has appeared in Belfast Magistrate's Court charged with the murder of a man in south Belfast at the weekend.

John Crolly, of Hartington Court, today said that he denied the murder of Daniel Whyte, 59, who he regarded as a friend.

Mr Whyte, originally from Bangor in County Down, died after being stabbed at a flat in Hartington Court in the Dublin Road area of the city on Friday night.

A police officer today told the court that he believed that he could connect Mr Crolly to the murder.

A state pathologist also revealed after carrying out a post-mortem examination that the victim had died as the result of a “homocidal attack, which could not possibly have been committed by a self-inflicted wound.”

The police officer added that following investigations into the incident that they were aware that Mr Crolly had been in the property at the time of the stabbing.

He was remanded in custody and will appear in court via video-link on March 5.

Mr Crolly's solicitor said that his client would be appealing for high court bail.
