Man killed in Tyrone house fire

A 50-year-old man has died in a fire in County Tyrone.

Tony McDermott’s body was recovered from the building at around 9.30am this morning. Two neighbours attempted to rescue the separated father of one from his home in Waterside Street in Strabane.

Sean Barr, 23, led the rescue attempt. His father Ivan described the death as a tragedy.

Ivan said: “The fire brigade had to use an axe on the door, it was so difficult to get in but they ended up carrying him out on a stretcher.”

Police and ambulance crews also arrived on the scene and the area was cordoned off while firefighers carried out their investigation.

Mr McDermott was described by Mr Barr senior, as “a person who believed in keeping himself to himself, a quiet man, but still sociable. His family are originally from the Donemana area but he has lived there for many years”.

He had worked at the Dupont factory in Londonderry and in the now non-operational Adria women’s clothing factory.

Police have not established the cause of the blaze at this time.

The victim was rescued from his house and taken to hospital, but was confirmed dead on arrival.
