Republican candidate arrested over 'serious terrorist crime'

An Independent Republican candidate was arrested yesterday over “serious terrorist crime”.

Gerry McGeough, 46, was arrested after leaving the count centre at Omagh leisure centre. The candidate in Fermanagh and South Tyrone is being questioned over the murder of a UDR member in 1981.

Another man has also been arrested in Aughnacloy and police have revealed both are linked.

Vincie McAnespie, 44, is the husband of a Sinn Fein councillor in Monaghan, Brenda McAnespie. His brother Aiden was shot dead by the army in Aughnacloy in 1988.

Both men were questioned last night at the Serious Crime Suite in Antrim last night.

Sinn Fein's Michelle Gildernew has called for the release of Mr McGeough, and the MP condemned the arrest as “political policing”.

Leader of the party, Gerry Adams, has also condemned the arrest, saying: “He was campaigning openly and attended one of the meetings. He should be released.”

The PSNI issued a statement saying they “acted as soon as the required operational process had been completed and the appropriate resources were in place.”

“The rationale for the arrest and its timing was based on the police obligation to investigate serious crime,” the statement said.
