Police appeal after north Belfast robberies

Police in north Belfast are appealing for information following two armed robberies in the area yesterday.

At around 6.45pm a male entered a newsagents shop in the Ballysillan estate and pointed a gun at a female shop assistant. He demanded cash from the till and made off with a sum of money. Although unhurt, the shop assistant was badly shaken.

The assailant is described as in his early 20s, 5ft 4in tall, of medium build and spoke with a local accent. He wore a light grey sports top, blue jeans and had a light blue scarf over his face.

The second robbery occurred on the Oldpark Road at around 3.30pm when a male entered a chemist shop and threatened staff with a handgun. He made off with an undisclosed sum of cash.

The robber is described as being in his late teens around 6ft tall and was wearing a light blue coloured baseball cap, a dark sweatshirt and a beige jacket.

Elsewhere a woman was held at gunpoint in the Barnagh Grove area of Newtownards last night.

At around 6pm the lady, a collection agent, crossed into Barnagh Grove from the Beechfield and Ashfield Estate. A man then ran up to her demanding the bag she was carrying containing cash and shopping vouchers. He held a gun to her head and snatched the bag. The woman was shocked but unhurt in the incident.

The assailant, who is described as around 5ft 7in tall and of small to medium build, ran off in the direction of the Conneyreagh Road. He was wearing a black balaclava and blue jeans, and spoke with a local accent.
