Ballynahinch police station raided

Burglars have broken into a police station in County Down, it has been revealed.

The station at Ballynahinch was raided, however nothing was taken in the overnight break-in.

An assembly member for the area, Jim Wells, said weapons or confidential documents could have been stolen from the station.

The South Down DUP MLA said: “They appear to have climbed over the wall, through a window to the station.

“There were officers on duty, but they were out on patrol. There were definitely weapons kept in the station, although it is being renovated.”

He added: “They rummaged around but they didn’t steal anything, although they could have, and the police don’t even know what time they were there at.

“No alarm went off, no cameras, nothing.”

It is understood officers were out on patrol when the thieves entered the premises.

A police spokesperson confirmed there were no officers inside at the time.
