Portadown filling station robbery appeal

Police in Portadown have appealed for information following a robbery at a filling station in the Bridge Street area of Portadown on Tuesday July 17.

One of two men who entered the shop asked for cigarettes, but he then produced a hammer and demanded money from the till. Police said that the second man was carrying a screw-driver. Both men then took an undisclosed amount of money from tills and a quanitity of cigarettes before making off.

The two staff on duty at the filling station were not injured.

A police spokesperson described the first man as being in his late 40s and around 5ft 6ins tall with grey hair. He was wearing a red hooded jacket with a black stripe down each arm. He was also wearing blue jeans, black gloves and a black baseball cap.

The second man was described as being around 6ft tall and of stocky build with brown hair. He was wearing a navy or grey fleece with dark bottoms and white trainers. He was also wearing glasses.

Police are appealing to anyone who was in the area and noticed any suspicious activity to contact them on: 0845 600 8000. Alternatively, information can be given anonymously by telephoning Crimestoppers on: 0800 555 111.

Woman Dies In Garage Fire At Portadown Home
A woman has died after a fire in the garage of a house in Portadown, County Armagh. The fire at Oakleigh Park, off the Brownstown Road, was reported to police shortly after 07:20 GMT on Monday. Police and firefighters are still at the scene and are investigating the cause of the fire. The woman's name has not yet been released.

Man Arrested Over Murder Of George Gilmore
A 39-year-old man has been arrested by police investigating the murder of George Gilmore. Mr Gilmore, aged 44, was shot in the neck in Carrickfergus on Monday, 13 March. He died from his injuries in hospital the following day, 14 March. The suspect was detained in Co Antrim on Wednesday, 12 April, and is being questioned at Musgrave police station.

Man questioned about 1988 murder
A man has been arrested in connection with police inquiries into a murder in 1988. The body of Lily Smyth, 66, was found in her flat at Moveen House in Dunmurry on October 9, 1988. The pensioner had been strangled. A police spokesperson said that a 43-year-old man had been arrested and is being questioned at Antrim Police Station.

Easter Commemorations 'Should Be Dignified And Respectful'
Sinn Féin MLA and policing spokesperson Gerry Kelly has said that all Easter commemorations should be dignified and respectful and that "the days of people wearing masks at commemorations should be over". Mr Kelly said: "This week Easter commemorations were held all over Ireland.
