Delays for 999 callers in NI

Northern Ireland callers trying to get through to the national 999 emergency line are having to hold due to a delay caused by a high volume of calls following flash floods in England.

Police, Fire, Ambulance and Coast Guard services are those being affected and callers are waiting almost 10 seconds to get through to an operator.

Calls are routed to individual services by the central offices in England and they are being inundated by calls following rainfall of up to one inch an hour.

Northern Ireland and Scotland are to brace themselves this weekend for a band of severe weather, which has already hit southern and central England and Wales.

Co-ordinators have set up a second additional number for local emergencies 02890 901278.

Callers using this alternate number are asked to state immediately that it is an emergency call.
