Man shot as police head off terror attack
A man is seriously ill in hospital after police opened fire on two men believed to be involved in planting an incendiary device in Belfast City centre last night.
It is understood that two cars were driven to Upper Queen's Street at around 6pm. One of the cars was parked outside the vehicle tax office and the driver got into the second car. The police then stopped the car as it pulled into Fisherwick Place and one of the men was shot in the chest and leg. A second man was arrested.
The injured man was taken to the Royal Victoria Hospital where his condition was described as critical.
Security forces immediately cordoned off the area and controlled explosions were carried out on the abandoned vehicle. A large incendiary-type device found in the car was then made safe by Army Technical Officers.
The Police Ombudsman, Nuala O'Loan, has been informed of the incident and will investigate the conduct of the police officers.
Sinn Fein chairman Mitchel McLaughlin condemned the shooting, saying that, as he understood it, the men were unarmed.
He added: "We believe there was the possibility of intervening without shooting anybody. But there's now a young man fighting for his life."
Recent trends would suggest that dissident republicans were responsible for transporting the bomb, as both the Real IRA and Continuity IRA have sparked a number of security alerts in the city over recent weeks.
Police have appealed for anyone with information to come forward.
