SF official denied bail at High Court

The Sinn Fein official who was arrested last month for alleged intelligence gathering activity has been refused bail at the High Court today.

Fifty-two-year-old Denis Donaldson from Aitnamona Crescent in west Belfast is facing five charges of possessing information likely to be of use to terrorists. He denies all the charges.

Mr Donaldson was arrested on October 4 following police raids in which 1,200 documents were recovered from his house. The court was told that around 700 originated from the NIO.

Mr Donaldson was among four people arrested and charged following 'Operation Torsion' which involved hundreds of police officers.

Two of those arrested have been released on bail and the third man – Mr Donaldson's son-in-law Ciaran Kearney – was denied an application for bail on November 5.

The political backlash which followed the arrests precipitated the suspension of the devolved government on October 14.
