Bail hearing for 'spy ring' accused is adjourned

The Sinn Fein official who was arrested last month for alleged intelligence gathering activity has had his bail hearing adjourned until tomorrow.

However, during today's High Court submission before Lord Justice Nicholson, the prosecution alleged Sinn Fein's head of administration at Stormont, Denis Donaldson, had fostered links between the IRA, PLO and Eta.

The prosecution further alleged that Mr Donaldson should be denied bail as he is a senior member of the IRA's intelligence gathering wing.

The 52-year-old from Aitnamona Crescent in west Belfast currently faces five charges of possessing information likely to be of use to terrorists following the raids in which 1,200 documents were recovered from his house. The court was told that around 700 originated from the NIO.

Mr Donaldson has been held since his arrest by the PSNI on October 4 in 'Operation Torsion'. He was among four people arrested and charged following the swoop which involved hundreds of police officers.

Two of those arrested have been released on bail and the third man – Mr Donaldson's son-in-law Ciaran Kearney – was denied an application for bail on November 5.

The political backlash which followed the arrests precipitated the suspension of the devolved government on October 14.
