NI Needs Women-Only Prison, Report Says

Northern Ireland should have a women-only prison, according to a report by the Independent Monitoring Body (IMB).

Female prisoners are presently held in Hydebank Prison, just outside Belfast, which is shared with young male offenders.

The IMB from Hydebank prison said that a complete division between male and female prisoners would be beneficial, following growing tensions.

Jimmy McClean, Chairman of the Hydebank IMB, said: "There is an urgent need for a separate prison that could focus on the specific needs of women."

The report has been submitted to the Secretary of State.
