Downpatrick to benefit from modern Buscentre

Downpatrick is to benefit from £1.3m investment in a new Buscentre, which will see the existing facility demolished and replaced by a high-tech, fully modern facility.

The project, which is due to commence in January 2003, will see the current building – which was built in the 1960s – make way for a new station which will include many features that Translink say will improve passengers' travelling experience. It is hoped that the construction will be complete by early 2004, when the facility will have LCD screens for continual updating of passenger information, CCTV for increased security, covered departure stands, heated waiting area, parent and baby room and a vending area.

The new station will also fully comply with Translink's commitment to providing greater comfort and convenience for passengers with disabilities, with provision for disabled toilers, a lift, low-level ticket desks and an induction loop for the hard of hearing.

Gary Mawhinney, Downpatrick Station Manager, explained: "We have looked carefully at the needs of our customers and are confident that the new station and its facilities will mean a completely improved travelling experience for them, in terms of comfort, convenience and security.

"This programme of investment will bring Downpatrick into line with the excellent service and surroundings that are becoming the standard for public transport users across Northern Ireland."
