Victim of savage beating 'seriously ill'

A man is "seriously ill" in hospital after he was savagely beaten in Larne last night.

The victim, a 29-year-old Catholic, was walking home toward the entrance of the Gardenmore House flats at around midnight when he was approached by two men.

The pair attacked the man, forcing him to the ground before kicking him several times in the head.

Larne SDLP councillor Danny O'Connor condemned the beating as an "act of barbarity".

"Anybody who kicks someone repeatedly about the head is trying to kill them or certainly cause them very serious damage. I would call on the public to come forward and assist the police in their inquiries," he said.

DUP councillor Jack McKee also condemned the attack, saying: "This is really terrible. People in this town are getting afraid to go out. That is no way for a town to be. People should be allowed to live in peace."

Police have not yet ruled out a sectarian motive for the attack and have appealed for anyone with information come forward.
