Distraught Mum Grieves 10th Portadown Suicide

The mother of a suicide victim has spoken of her grief following the news that her son's dead body lay undiscovered in his Co Armagh flat for three full days.

The family of 21-year-old David Purdy are devastated that his decomposing body had been lying in his home in Portadown for that length of time.

David Purdy is the 10th recent suicide victim in the Portadown area, following the spate of such self-inflicted deaths last summer and autumn when five students, a man in his 30s, two immigrants and a young mother took their own lives.

Mother Sharon Williamson and her partner Jim Warnock were enjoying a holiday in Gambia, west Africa, when news of the suicide came through.

David is thought to have taken an overdose of drugs in his flat at Church Street, Portadown.

The mother, Mrs Williamson said: "He was in trouble in the past, but he was sorting himself out and was a hard-working and valued employee of a Portadown building contractor.

"We're absolutely shattered. We expect him to be coming through our front door at any time, but he'll never be here again," she said.
