Partially sighted man assaulted by gang of youths

A partially sighted man has been assaulted and robbed by a gang of youths in Londonderry earlier this morning.

The man was walking with his guide dog at around 1.30am this morning when he was approached by a number of youths at Gogarty Close. He was then assaulted and forced to hand over his wallet. He suffered a cut to his head as a result of the incident.

The SDLP assembly member for the area Annie Courtney has described the assault on the disabled man as "sick".

Mrs Courtney, who was blinded in one eye following a similar attack earlier this year, said it wasn't the first time that people with disabilities had been targeted in the city.

Police have appealed for anyone who witnessed the incident to contact them.
