SDLP call for closer links between PSNI and Gardai

A senior SDLP delegation has met with the Republic's Minister of Justice, Equality and Law Reform in Dublin this morning.

At the meeting the SLDP presented a document to the Minister calling for strong proposals for future PSNI/Gardai co-operation, secondments and exchanges.

Speaking in advance of the meeting, SDLP Chairperson Alex Attwood said: “Following Patten, radical breakthroughs in PSNI/Gardai co-operation are being worked up, including the entry of Gardai officers into the PSNI and long-term exchange and secondments between the two police services."

The SDLP also urged the Irish Government to table legislation in the Dail to enable Gardai officers to enter the PSNI with full constabulary power, and that Gardai officers should be identified to be available to the PSNI under secondments or long-term exchanges. These methods, say the SDLP, can build up the expertise and availability of experienced officers in the PSNI at a time when there is a deficit in qualified PSNI officers in certain areas.

SDLP justice spokesperson, Alban Maginness added: "The SDLP shall be proposing the quick development of an all-Ireland Charter of Rights, to upgrade rights protection throughout the island. The political authorities and citizens of the island should seek out the highest level of protection in the widest range of rights on the island. An all-island charter can achieve this objective.”

The SDLP also argued for an all-Ireland Law Reform Commission to deliver new laws and issues relating to the environment, public safety, health and agriculture.

"There are vast opportunities to harmonise and integrate the legal system on the island benefiting all and threatening none. An all-Ireland Law Reform Commission can be the frontline of this strategy,” said Mr Maginness.
