Newtownabbey's Top Cop Promises Partnership

A newly appointed Co Antrim police commander has vowed to work in partnership with the local community in a bid to combat crime.

Chief Inspector Paula Hilman, who officially took over the post of Area Commander in Newtownabbey on Monday, said that she is determined to build on the good work of her predecessor, John McCaughan.

Mrs Hilman, who was previously head of policing in Lisburn, replaces Mr McCaughan following his promotion to the rank of Superintendent and move to District headquarters.

Mr McCaughan, who became Area Commander following the reorganisation of Northern Ireland's district policing structure just over a year ago, has taken up a new role as D District's head of Operations based in Lisburn.

"I am determined to continue the excellent work of my predecessor," Chief Inspector Hilman said.

"Across D District, which includes Newtownabbey, Lisburn, Antrim and Carrickfergus, the latest figures show that recorded crime has fallen by an estimated 15% compared with the same period last year. In the Newtownabbey area itself, recorded crime is down by an estimated 20.1%.

"I will be working hard in partnership with the local community to continue to reduce crime and bring those responsible before the courts. Together we can build a safer community," she added.

The Chairman of Newtownabbey District Policing Partnership, Councillor Tom Campbell, has welcomed the arrival of the new Area Commander.
