West Link Delays Warning As Latest Upgrade Completed

As reported on 4ni.co.uk yesterday, a further phase of the long-running West Link renewal has been completed - but motorists are being advised to allow extra time for their journey today after the latest upgrade to the M1 route.

The junction at Stockman's Lane is now operational after more than two years of construction work.

However, new traffic lights have been installed on the roundabout - and while they will be monitored over the next few days to help co-ordinate the flow of traffic across the city - delays are anticipated.

Kevin Monaghan from the NI Roads Service said drivers should allow extra time for journeys over the next few days.

"The big time for motorists will be the peak hour in the morning and the peak hour in the evening," he said.

It is the latest phase in the £75m project, to be finished next year. NI Roads Minister Conor Murphy officially announced the opening of the junction, and said the work, which lasted 27 months, represents another "significant step" towards the completion of the M1/Westlink project.

Minister Murphy said: "While the overall project remains ahead of schedule this particular part of the works has been completed exactly on time.

"The complete replacement of two bridges on a live motorway while keeping traffic running is an amazing achievement - I would again like to commend all involved with the project."

The replacement of the bridges, which carry the M1 over this junction, has allowed the junction to be widened to accommodate three lanes of traffic and the installation of traffic signals to control traffic going through the junction.
