Mob attacks fire crew in Co Londonderry
Fire fighters in Londonderry came under attack last night after responding to reports of a fire in the Glenfada Park area of the Bogside.
The fire crew had to withdraw from the area after they where attacked by stone throwers. During the incident, a windscreen on the vehicle was smashed, but no one was injured.
SDLP councillor, Helen Quigley condemned the attack describing it as "malicious" and "shameful".
She added: "Attacks of this nature only serve to increase the possibility of no-go areas in Derry and elsewhere, where the emergency services will not go as their safety cannot be guaranteed.
"This particular area of the city is a regular hotspot for attacks such as this and action needs to be taken to bring it to an end."
Station officer Mark Darrall also condemned the attack and urged community representatives with influence to encourage those responsible to end the attacks.
This latest attack followed a similar incident on the Shankill Road in Belfast recently after a fire crew came under attack from a crowd of stone-throwing youths.
An emergency vehicle was also damaged in that incident, rendering it out of service for a short time.
The fire service has said attacks on fire crews were now becoming a daily occurrence across Northern Ireland. (MB)

Condemning a further spate of attacks on firefighters in Dungannon and Londonderry over the weekend, the Minister said it was absolutely unacceptable for anyone to assault emergency workers.

The 33 attacks on fire crews attending emergencies in NI over the past year are simply 'too high'. The Stormont Public Safety Minister, Michael McGimpsey said that such attacks on emergency workers are also putting lives in danger.

Newry City Fire Tackled
A major blaze was tackled at a derelict building in Newry last night. Six fire crews, backed by an hydraulic platform and water tanker, battled successfully to prevent flames spreading from a former Autopart store to surrounding buildings at Monaghan street and Upper Edward Street in the city. The cause of the outbreak is being investigated.

ASSEMBLY CREATE AWARD TO HONOUR FIRE SERVICE
THE Northern Ireland Fire Service is to receive the first ever award given by the province's devolved assembly. An illuminated scroll is to be presented to Chief Fire Officer John McClelland on Tuesday, by assembly speaker Lord Alderdice in tribute to the sacrifice made by fire fighters over the years.

Safety scheme hopes to reduce attacks on emergency services
A new scheme has been launched by the Belfast Community Safety Partnership to reduce attacks on emergency services in west Belfast. Pupils from primary and secondary schools will meet with ambulance crew, police and fire officers to listen to how attacks affect them and the community.
