Pizza Man Killing: Two Held

There have been arrests in the case of the murder of pizza delivery man Emmet Shiels. Two men have been held by police investigating the fatal shooting of the 22-year-old man in the Creggan area of Londonderry. Mr Shiels, from Tyrconnell Street in the Bogside, was shot in the Bligh's Lane area of Derry in the early hours of Tuesday. He was driving his delivery van when he was innocently caught up in a confrontation with masked gunmen. The arrested men, who are in their teens and early 20s, were taken into custody after they went to Strand Road police station.

Major Drug Raid In North Belfast

Police in north Belfast have launched a major investigation into cannabis growth. A number of searches were carried out in the Brookhill Avenue are as part of the major drugs raid. One man has been arrested during what the police have described as a "crack down against cannabis cultivation".

River Rescue Launched

A new rescue service aimed at saving lives has been launched in Coleraine, Co Londonderry. Bann Rescue is a team of 50 volunteers trained in water rescue, as well as search and intervention techniques. They will work with the PSNI and complement other services, including the RNLI, and Coastguard along the increasingly popular Lower River Bann.

Daughter Abuse Mum Jailed

A woman found guilty of sexually assaulting her young daughter has been jailed for two years. The 28-year-old, who cannot be named to protect the child's identity, was also ordered to serve two years' post-custodial supervision. The mother-of-three was convicted last month of two charges relating to an incident involving her two-and-a-half-year-old daughter in October 2006.

Tragic Schoolboy Buried

The funeral of a 13-year-old schoolboy who died suddenly after participating in his school sports day has taken place. Ryan Lyttle collapsed at his home in Glengormley after going up to his bedroom to change out of his sports clothes. He never regained consciousness and it is believed he suffered a fatal asthma attack. He was buried yesterday.

Strike Looms

There could be industrial action involving council and other public sector workers soon after a ballot has moved the situation nearer to strike action over pay. The looming dispute could leave bins unemptied and affect a series of other services, including education and housing. Trade union Unison has announced that a ballot of its members in local government in England, Wales and Northern Ireland had produced a 55% to 45% majority in favour of a strike. Two other unions with local government members in the Province, Unite and Nipsa, are due to complete their ballots this week.

Scam Warning Issued Following Taylor Swift Ticket Fraud
The PSNI in Derry City & Strabane have warned people to be wary of scammers following a report this week of a person who thought they'd bought tickets online for a Taylor Swift concert only to find out they'd been swindled. According to police, it was reported that a person had found tickets for the concert on an online platform.

Police Officers Disciplined For Failing To Tell Doctor About Woman's Head Injuries
Two police officers have been disciplined after they failed to let their colleagues and a police doctor know that a woman had sustained a head injury, a Police Ombudsman investigation has concluded. The woman died from bleeding to the brain on 24 February 2014, the day after she suffered the injury.

Belfast Man Handed Two-Year Stalking Protection Order
The PSNI have welcomed a two-year Stalking Protection Order (SPO) handed down to a 46-year-old Belfast man at Belfast Magistrates Court. The man had been found guilty of stalking and harassing his 50-year-old female ex-partner.

Man Jailed For Manslaughter Of David James Conville
A 31-year-old man has been jailed at Belfast Crown Court for the manslaughter of David James Conville in south Belfast in May, 2022. Edward Kelly was sentenced to serve three-and-a-half years, half of his sentence will be served in custody and half will be served on licence, following his guilty plea last November.

Man Dies In Co L'Derry House Fire
A man aged in his 50s has died in a house fire in Magherafelt, Co L'Derry An investigation has been launched into the cause of the fire at a house on Highfield Road, however police said that they don't believe the fire was suspicious. The man's identity has not yet been released.
