Fatality Is 50th NI Road Victim

A 20-year-old man - Liam Cotter from Killyliss Road, Dungannon - has died following a road accident. Mr Cotter was in one of two cars that collided on the town's Granville Road at about 3.30am on Sunday. A second man was also taken to hospital where his condition is described as stable. He was the 50th person to die on Northern Ireland's roads since the beginning of the year.

Derry Murder: Man Remanded

A man accused in connection with the murder of Emmett Shiels in Londonderry last month has been remanded in custody at a hearing at Londonderry Magistrates Court on Saturday. The 18-year-old man, Garry Meenan from Bishop's Street in the city is also accused of a number of related firearms offences. A detective inspector told the court he believed the defendant did not fire the shots which killed Mr Shiels but was part of the gang which murdered him. He said that during five days of questioning Mr Meenan consistently denied the charges.

Teen's Baseball Bat Assault Probed

A 19-year-old man has been attacked by six men with baseball bats at a house in east Belfast. The assault took place at a house in the Island Street area at about 3am on Sunday. The victim was taken to hospital where he was treated for bruising to his head and body.

Church 'Happy' About Gays

Just weeks after controversial remarks made by DUP MP Iris Robinson, wife of NI First Minister, Peter Robinson - that homosexuals should be seen by a psychiatrist - the head of the Church of Ireland has said if homosexuality is proven to be biologically predetermined then his church would have to allow gay unions. "If such comes to be shown, it will be necessary to acknowledge the full implications of that new aspect of the truth," said Archbishop Alan Harper. Mrs Robinson said that gay sex was a "sin" and an "abomination" and recommended gay people to a psychiatrist who could help "cure" them.

Drug Charges

A 25-year-old man is due to appear at Belfast Magistrates Court on Monday, charged with a series of drug and gun related offences. It follows a raid at a house in the Ballymurphy area of west Belfast on Friday in which guns, cannabis and cash were seized.

Serious Road Crash In L'Derry
A serious road crash has occurred on the Chapel Road in L'Derry. A car and a motorbike where involved in the incident, according to the police. One man, believed to be a teenager, has been taken to hospital where his injuries are believed to be serious. The road has been closed at its junctions with Newlyn Terrace and Spencer Road.

Man Dies In Tyrone Farm Accident
The Health & Safety Executive (HSE) has launched an investigation after a man died in a farm accident in Co Tyrone. Emergency services were called to the farm in the Coolaghy Road area of Ardstraw on Sunday, 02 September. His death is not being treated as suspicious and a post-mortem is to be carried out.

Man Dies In Co L'Derry House Fire
A man aged in his 50s has died in a house fire in Magherafelt, Co L'Derry An investigation has been launched into the cause of the fire at a house on Highfield Road, however police said that they don't believe the fire was suspicious. The man's identity has not yet been released.

Witness Appeal After Stabbing Incident In Downpatrick
Police have issued an appeal for witnesses following an assault in the Ardilea Park area of Downpatrick in the early hours of Sunday morning, 10 December. A 22-year-old man was found with serious stab wounds at a house in the Killough Road area just after 4am. He was treated at the scene before being taken to hospital by ambulance.
