400 jobs to be created at Shorts

Around 400 jobs are likely to be created at aerospace company Shorts after parent company Bombardier decided to build part of its new corporate jet in Belfast.

The decision to build the fuselage of the new plane, a Learjet, at Shorts was announced yesterday.

However, a decision on whether to recruit new staff, or to work from within the existing workforce, is not expected to be made until later this year.

This latest jobs announcement is better news for the Belfast-based factory after more than 1,000 jobs were lost following the downturn in the aerospace and air travel industry in the wake of the September 11 terror attacks.

The Learjet 40 is designed to carry four passengers and has a range of over 1,800 miles.

Its fuselage will now be built alongside that of the bigger Learjet 45 which is also constructed at the east Belfast factory.
