Death Toll Rises On Irish Roads

As a weekend of carnage on Irish roads comes to an end, a man is still fighting for his life in an Ulster hospital after a suspected hit-and-run on Saturday night.

The man, who is said to be in his 50s, was found shortly before 9pm last night in the car park of a country park in Ballyarnett, Londonderry, with serious injuries to his body.

Altnagelvin Hospital reported last night that the victim was in a critical but stable condition.

This is the latest in a series of alleged 'hit-and-runs' as a man was knocked down in nearby Racecourse Road, and then assaulted by the occupants of the car, just weeks ago.

It has also emerged that the injured man, named as Don Campbell, is the brother-in-law of Mitchel McLaughlin, the Sinn Fein MLA and the party's Deputy Leader.

While the PSNI has appealed for anyone with information to come forward, their opposite number in the Irish Republic are dealing with the aftermath of a tragic weekend.

Gardai in Cork, are investigating a fatal road traffic collision, involving two cars, that occurred on Commons Road, shortly before 1am on Sunday.

A 25-year-old female driver of one of the vehicles was fatally injured and later pronounced dead at Cork University Hospital while a passenger received minor injuries.

The driver of the second car, who was alone, is receiving treatment for his injuries and is described as not life threatening.

Gardai in Tramore are also looking into an incident where a 35-year-old male motorcyclist was fatally injured when he lost control of his motorcycle at Monvoy, Tramore, Co Waterford at 3.30pm on Sunday.

He was pronounced dead at the scene and his body has been removed to Waterford Regional Hospital.

Meanwhile, a second man has died as a result of a crash on Friday on the N21 at Clogh, Rathkeale, Co. Limerick.

He was the driver of the car and he died at the weekend in Limerick Regional Hospital.

He has been named as 31-year-old Polish National Adam Zajac, with an address in Castletroy.

The other man killed was also a Polish National with an address in Castletroy. He had already been named as 30-year-old Tomasz Stelmaszczuk.

Last Thursday, a single vehicle collision between a lorry and a pedestrian on Granard Street, Ballyjamesduff, at approximately 11.55am, left a 91 year-old male pedestrian fatally injured when he was hit by a lorry collided as he crossed the street.

He was taken by ambulance to Cavan General Hospital where he was pronounced dead on arrival.

The male pedestrian has been named as Harry Gaffney, Gallonbane, Ballyjamesduff.
