High Street Backing For Breast Cancer Awareness

A chain of NI chemist shops has linked up with leading local cancer charity, the Ulster Cancer Foundation to encourage people to Think Pink!

Throughout October the MediCare Pharmacy Group has agreed to encourage members of the public to show their support for the charity's awareness and fundraising initiative called 'Pink Link', which helps local women with breast cancer.

Joyce Savage, Head of Appeals & Marketing, UCF said: "Pink Link is a great way for everyone to get involved in our Think Pink! breast cancer awareness campaign.

"We are delighted that MediCare will be supporting us this year and we invite everyone to come along to their local MediCare Pharmacy on Friday 31st October.

"Supporters will be encouraged to sign the 'pink ribbon of hope' or write a short dedication in memory of a loved one or in support of a family member or friend currently undergoing treatment.

"Supporters will also be encouraged to give a donation of their choice to the campaign to raise vital funds to support and care for women with breast cancer in Northern Ireland," she said, noting that breast cancer is now the most common form of cancer amongst women in Northern Ireland.

"Every year there are over 1,000 new cases of breast cancer diagnosed with one in 11 women developing the disease before the age of 75," she said.

"In recent years, due to increased awareness and early detection, more women have been diagnosed with breast cancer; but the good news is that survival rates are improving.

"Today, there are around 7,000 women with a diagnosis of breast cancer living in Northern Ireland."

Michael Guerin, Managing Director, MediCare Pharmacy Group commented: "We are thrilled to be working with the Ulster Cancer Foundation in support of their Think Pink! campaign.

"With 54 pharmacies across Northern Ireland, we want to help the charity bring the breast cancer message right into the heart of the local community," he said.
