Chairman apologises for confidentiality breach

The Chairman of the Policing Board has issued an apology to each of the candidates involved in the Chief Constable recruitment competition for the breach in confidentiality.

The apology was issued today by Professor Des Rea after comments were made by two Policing Board members regarding the quality of the candidates interviewed and the subsequent choice of Chief Constable Hugh Orde.

Chairman of the Board, Professor Desmond Rea, said: “The recruitment process should have been strictly confidential to the Policing Board and the media comments following completion of the process were completely unacceptable.

“On behalf of the Policing Board, I would like to apologise for the breach of candidate confidentiality and any resulting distress or embarrassment this may have caused.

“The professionalism and integrity displayed by ACC Albiston, ACC McQuillan and DAC Orde throughout the process is to be commended.

“Throughout their careers, each of the two unsuccessful officers has made a significant contribution to policing and I hope the PSNI will continue to benefit from their skills and experience.

“I trust this apology will be accepted by each of the candidates in the spirit with which it is given.”
