Jobs Boost for Cork And Carlow

There's to be a jobs' bonanza in counties Carlow and Cork with news of hundreds of new jobs.

Some are to be created by pharmaceutical company Merck Sharp & Dohme which has announced it will boost local employment with 170 jobs at a new vaccine facility in Carlow.

The company also said that 300 workers will also be employed in the construction phase of the €200m plant.

MSD Ireland (Biologics) Carlow joins MSD Ireland (Human Health) Dublin and MSD Ireland (Manufacturing) Tipperary as Merck Sharp & Dohme's third Irish facility.

The company's Irish operations are involved in the research, development, manufacturing and marketing of vaccines and medicines that address worldwide medical needs.

In Cork, one of the world's biggest hotel chains, Marriott International, is expected to announce details of a project which will lead to the creation of 220 jobs.

Many of its reservations and customer services are currently handled in Ireland by multilingual call centres.

Around 160 people are currently employed at the call centre at the Cork Airport Business Park and this figure is projected to grow further.

Marriott International is understood to be impressed with the success of that operation and has been in negotiations to expand further in Cork.

In 2002 the hotel chain also established the European headquarters of its timeshare vacation club in Cork with the support of IDA Ireland.
