Art 'Behind Bars' Welcomed
North Belfast's historic Crumlin Road gaol is putting on a colourful face this week with news of an art exhibition at the now vacant premises.
Local young artist Gemma Gallagher and Alicia Logan - from London - will exhibit a series of paintings revealing each artist's perspective on the subject of imprisonment.
The Gaol (pictured) will provide the artists with a unique opportunity to showcase their talents against the dramatic backdrop of one of the city's most famous and interesting buildings.
Welcoming the event, NI Social Development Minister Margaret Ritchie said: "I very much welcome the use of the Goal as a shared space for the local community.
"This powerful art exhibition is another example of good public use of the Gaol following recent tours, the production of Macbeth in 2007 and more recently, a very successful evening celebrating the music and dance of the Ulster-Scots, Irish and ethnic cultures.
"The exhibition offers an alternative and original way to experience art in a building steeped in history.
"The interior of the Gaol is ideally suited for conveying a unique sense of the exhibition's main theme, 'Entrapment' and I wish to congratulate all those involved," she said today.
Exhibiting local artist, Gemma Gallagher said: "This is a great opportunity, which I am excited to be involved in. The Gaol offers both an exciting location and an inspiring space for young artists to display their work. I look forward to the creative possibilities and opportunities that will arise from the renaissance of the Crumlin Road Gaol."
Visitors will also have the opportunity to hear the artists speak about their work during the exhibition, which is scheduled to run from Wednesday 5– 11 November.
