Plans For Huge Shopping Centre Approved

An Bord Pleanala has approved plans for a huge shopping centre that will create over 1,300 jobs.

The €200 million Newgate Centre to be based in Waterford in three years time will also mean 600 jobs in the construction industry for the 5.1 acre site.

The scheme includes more than 50 retail outlets; a 107-bed, four-star hotel with a substantial conference centre and leisure facilities; arts, cultural and community facilities; and underground parking for over 600 vehicles.

Local residents and interest groups had appealed the earlier Waterford City Council decision to allow the proposal to go into the planning stage, but following yesterday's decision it is unsure whether the protests will continue in the same voice considering the present desperation in the construction sector.

Work is expected to start in the early part of next year.
