Dell set to lay off 150 in Limerick

Computer manufacturer Dell is to implement 150 voluntary redundancies among staff at its Limerick plant.

The move is thought to affect only administrative staff and management at the plant, with no layoffs set to occur amongst manufacturing staff. Dell has also assured staff at its sales and support centres in Bray, Co Wicklow, and Cherrywood, Co Dublin that they are unaffected by the redundancy announcement.

The second-biggest computer maker in the world, Dell currently employs 4,500 people throughout Ireland. Recently, the economic slowdown in the high-tech sector forced the firm to shed 325 jobs at the Limerick and Bray operations.

Dell have recently released figures showing a slightly better-than-expected performance for its first quarter, with earnings per share of 17 cents and $8.7 billion in revenues.

However, the company's net income is down from last quarter's figure of $462 million, now standing at $457 million, as computer prices continue to fall.
