Jobs Lost At Building Supplies Group
In day of continuing pressure for the Government over the economic crisis, a large building firm has announced a slew of job cuts.
The Wolseley Building Plumbing and building supplies group has announced it is to lay off 180 staff nationwide and close four stores around the country.
Two of the shops are based in Tullamore, Co Offaly where workers are meeting with management. Meetings with workers at two other stores will be held this afternoon.
A spokesman for the company has attributed the company's recent troubles to "further deterioration in Wolseley's general trading environment in November and December due to unprecedented events in the global financial markets and negative GDP trends."
The company also claimed that recent exchange rate movement has negatively affected the company's overall debt position, with an increase of 22% according to their latest figures for the five months ending 31 December 2008.
The groups spokesman added that the next few months will be critical in providing further evidence to assess how the downturn may evolve.

No Waste Of Jobs in Limerick
A Northern waste treatment company has announced it is to create 50 jobs at a new facility in Limerick. The Re3 Group says it plans to invest €15m in the plant, which will use steam technology as an alternative to landfill and incineration. The 50 jobs are due to be filled over the next 12 months.

Newry Heating Jobs Lost
A major electrical manufacturer in Co Down is to shed staff. The Glen Electric plant in Newry, which makes convector and panel heaters, has said it will lay-off 40 employees. It blamed the redundancies on competition from China as well as the global recession, which has led to a slowdown in construction.

Navan Assured Of Jobs' Boost
There is to be half as many staff again at an Irish-based insurance company. Insurance group Generali PanEurope said it will create up to 30 jobs in Navan, and plans to boost the group's overall Irish workforce by up to 50% in the coming months.
