Cocaine Smuggler Sentenced To Five Years
A smuggler who swallowed palstic bags of powerful cocaine has been sentenced to five years in prison.
David Ugochukwu, 31, from Blarney Street, Cork, attempted to bring £300,000 worth of the deadly drug into Northern Ireland.
He was caught arriving at Belfast International Airport from Amsterdam in August 2008, Revenue and Customs said.
Assistant Director John Whiting said: "Criminals dealing in illegal drugs are thinking solely of profit and show utter disregard for the damage drugs do to individuals and communities."
Ugochukwu appeared at Antrim Crown Court yesterday after 46 packages containing nearly 629 grammes of cocaine were recovered from the courier's system by the revenue enforcement officers.
The drug was highly potent, at around 70% purity and would have rapidly killed the accused had any of the bags broken open while in his stomach or intestines.
