Former SF councillor’s home attacked

Army bomb disposal experts have defused a nail bomb thrown at the house of a former Sinn Féin councillor in north Belfast.

The device did not explode after it bounced off a front window at the house on Cavehill Road on Thursday morning.

The house belongs to former north Belfast Sinn Féin councillor Mick Conlon.

His house is near Antrim Road police station.

Children who were playing nearby two schools were moved away from the scene during the examination.

North Belfast SDLP assembly member Alban Maginness has condemned the bomb attack as “despicable”.

He said: “This attack on the home and family of an ex-Belfast City Councillor is despicable. I dread to think what may have happened if this device had exploded, especially given the large number of school children using the sports facility across the road. I am thankful that no one was injured.

“This attack was specifically designed to up the anti in north Belfast and scupper any attempts to cool tensions and prevent further violence on our streets in the run up to the summer months. This cannot be allowed to happen.”
