Timber Framing Firm Creates Carrick Jobs
A timber framing firm has created new jobs in the North Roscommon/Carrick-on-Shannon area.
Carrick-based Future Structures has expanded operations by taking on six new employees.
General Manager Vincent Durkin said he is confident there are enough first time buyers out there to sustain the market.
"They're all waiting to go out and buy," he said.
"They're shopping around and getting the best price they can, and timber frame is cost effective."
Future Structures' owner Padraig Martin is backed by a group of Dublin investors. Mr Durkin was approach to manage the firm's new factory because of his extensive knowledge of the timber framing industry.
He said people are choosing timber frame houses over the more conventional home due to the speed of construction.
"It's safer because it's quicker. It's easier to heat and of course every house requires an energy rating now."
He suggested an 'A' rated timber framed home would cost less than €600 a year to heat.
These style of houses have been built in Scandinavia for over 100 years, and in Scotland for almost 80.
According to Mr Durkin they meet all the necessary building regulations associated with a traditional home.
He said that despite the firm remaining small, it is able to provide quality timber at a "keen price".
"We're still only a small company and we're keeping it small and an eye on costs. It's still possible to produce a quality timber frame for a keen price."
