Prosecution Follows Building Site Death

The death of a construction worker in Belfast last year has led to the contractor being charged with several offences.

As reported in 4ni.co.uk at the time, the death of the 52-year-old victim was the second such Irish construction site death in a single day.

The other man who died was fatally injured after he got trapped under the wheel of a vehicle while working on a building site at Dublin Airport.

Another kind of vehicle - a forklift truck - was involved in the Belfast incident which occurred at the former Ormeau Bakery site on the Ormeau Road.

Northern Ireland's Health and Safety Executive undertook an investigation after the incident.

According to UTV today, the construction firm is now being prosecuted over the death of one of its workmen at the major apartment block development.

Graham Construction faces four charges connected to the death of south Belfast man, Gerard Morgan.

The Dromore-based company has now been accused of failing to provide a safe work environment, and if convicted, the company could face an unlimited fine.

UTV has reported that a preliminary enquiry was due to be held at Belfast Magistrates Court today to decide whether to send the case to the Crown Court, but following an application, that was adjourned until next month.
