Irish student raped on Belfast field trip

The young woman seriously sexually assaulted in Belfast at the weekend was a student from the Republic of Ireland.

Police said the young woman was the victim of a very serious rape.

The girl had travelled across the border with a number of friends on a field study trip and went to a city centre pub in Belfast on Friday night and left around 12.30am on Saturday morning.

Almost two hours later she was dropped at the youth hostel where she was staying on the Donegall Road by a man believed to be a taxi driver - who police have said they want to speak to urgently.

Chief Inspector Will Kerr said the young woman had been in a very distressed state and that the police were very keen to solve the crime and catch the perpetrator.

Detectives have also appealed for anyone with information to come forward who might have been in the university area between 12.30 and 2.30am.
