The teenage victim was walking past shops in the loyalist Monkstown Estate in Newtownabbey, County Antrim, when he was set upon and then savagely beaten by the gang. The boy is said to be recovering in the Royal Victoria Hospital in Belfast.

Police said that they believed it was a paramilitary-style attack.

In another attack on a different part of the Monkstown Estate, a 21-year-old man was forced into a van by two masked men. He was then driven to Ards Drive where he was shot in both legs. He was taken to hospital where his condition was described as 'stable'.
