Travel Company Faces Union Boycott

Travel agent Thomas Cook is facing a bookings' boycott by 800,000 trade union members after announcing it is to close its high street operation in Ireland.

The firm revealed it may be shutting its three Dublin stores leaving 77 jobs at risk.

Transport Salaried Staffs' Association (TSSA) launched a protest march in Dublin today in opposition to the closure and said it wanted urgent talks with the trade union umbrella group, The Irish Congress of Trade Unions, to persuade people to blacklist the holiday company.

Gerry Doherty, General Secretary, told the demonstrators in O'Connell Street: "If Thomas Cook wants to turn its back on the Irish people, then we are going to ask the Irish people to turn their back on the company."

Mr Doherty accused the firm's Spanish owner of trying to "bully and intimidate" the Dublin staff into accepting an offer of redundancy by threatening to close the Dublin outlets next week.

Thomas Cook insisted it would maintain its Irish business at its back office and call-centre operation in Parkwest, Dublin, with 70 positions being retained.
