South Belfast Bomb Made Safe

A 'viable device' found in south Belfast has been made safe by bomb disposals experts.

The device was discovered in the back yard of a house in Malone Park Central earlier today.

Technical officers ('Felix') later removed the object for forensic examination.

A security alert raised in the area has now been lifted.

Residents had been evacuated from their homes for safety reasons, but are now free to return.

Police are appealing for anyone with information to contact them on: 0845 6008000.

Felix (pictured) was a 'mascot' adopted by bomb squads all over the world as their symbol because of the cat's nine lives - and was 321 EOD Company, Royal Army Ordnance Corps call-sign when the unit was formed in Northern Ireland.

Meanwhile, traffic was diverted and buildings in the Charlemont Street area of Dublin were evacuated last night while gardaí and the Irish army dealt with a suspect device.

The army later examined the device with a remote control robot. The area was then declared safe and the remains of the package handed over for forensic examination.
