Man Accused Of Killing Internet Date Girl

A man has been charged with the manslaughter and kidnap of a teenage girl whose body was found dumped in a field.

The 32-year-old, of no fixed address, is accused of killing Ashleigh Hall, 17, from Darlington, Co Durham, on Monday night.

He is due to appear before Newton Aycliffe Magistrates' Court later.

As the man is a registered sex offender Durham Police have also charged him with failing to notify authorities of a new address, as is required under the Sexual Offences Act 2003.

Ashleigh, of Warwick Square, Darlington, was found dead in a field, near the Little Chef roundabout, off the A689 and A177 roads, near Sedgefield.

She was last seen alive on Sunday night, when she told her family she was going to stay with a friend. The alarm was raised when her mother failed to get a reply when she called her daughter's mobile phone the following day.

Police said she is understood to have been meeting people online through a social networking site before going missing.

According to The Daily Mirror Ashleigh told friends she had a date with a lad of 16 who had contacted her on Facebook.

The accused man was arrested after being stopped by police on suspicion of traffic offences on Monday night. Whilst in custody he asked to speak to detectives and took them to the field.

Ashleigh, a former student at Hurworth School, was described as "the nicest kid in the universe" by its Chief Executive Eamonn Farrar.

"She'd always have a smile for you walking down the corridor, she was very polite and no trouble at all."
