Poppy Appeal Strengthens
The 2009 Royal British Legion poppy appeal in aid of wounded service personnel and their families is expected to top last year's record total of £31m. The early signs were "encouraging", although the final total will not be known until next year. The current toll of casualties in Afghanistan was pushing the issue of supporting wounded servicemen and women and their families to the forefront of public consciousness. Since January alone, 93 men and women have lost their lives, making 2009 the bloodiest year for British troops since the Falklands War.
Murderer Sentenced
A man who murdered his girlfriend's 65-year-old mother at her home has been jailed for life for her murder. George Maben, 45, of St Helier Avenue, Morden, who was found guilty yesterday of the murder of Maureen Cosgrove in Sutton in March 2009 has been sentenced to life imprisonment, to serve a minimum of 12 and a half years. It follows an investigation by the Homicide and Specialist Crime Command, based at Sutton.
Student Falls To Death
A first-year university student has plunged 60ft to his death from a cliff close to his university in Fife. The 19-year-old was understood to have been taking a shortcut to a beach party when he fell from the cliff in St Andrews at about 1.30am and his body was washed up close to the spot where he fell, in the Scores area of the town, at about 3am.
ATM Digger Gang Sought
As news emerged today that a reward for catching criminals targeting cash machines in Northern Ireland has been offered, an MLA is urging the police to actively target the criminals. A 'bounty' of up to £25,000 is being offered for anyone who can help catch those responsible for a spate of cash machine thefts in NI. The move, by LINK, the operator of the UK's cash machine network, comes just hours after an MLA pleaded for action against the gang - or gangs - behind a series of daring digger-robberies of automated teller machines. According to Ulster Unionist MLA Tom Elliott, the PSNI should set up a special task force to tackle the growing problem of ATM raids.
