Tory Candidate Secures Selection

A Conservative parliamentary candidate has won her fight against being deselected by party members.

Elizabeth Truss's place on the national party's A-list was put in jeopardy when it was revealed she had had an affair with Tory MP Mark Field in 2004/05.

Some members of the South West Norfolk Conservative branch were concerned that they had not been made aware of the liaison.

A re-vote was called by the constituency association, which eventually voted 132 to 37 to back Ms Truss's candidacy at the next general election.

"I am absolutely delighted," she said, after the result was announced. "I very much look forward to beating Labour."

However, Tory grandee Sir Jeremy Bagge told the BBC: "I am not proud to be a Conservative because central office has deceived and betrayed us.

"These are strong words but that's how I feel."

An official party spokesman said: "We are delighted that Liz Truss has been selected."

He added: "She is the right candidate who will work tirelessly for the local community."

Ms Truss, a south-east London councillor, is touted as one of David Cameron's A-list would-be candidates, poised to increase the number of women and ethnic people on Tory benches at Westminster.
