Fatalities Hit 102

The Ministry of Defence has confirmed that two soldiers from 3rd Battalion The Rifles were killed yesterday near Sangin, in Afghanistan's Helmand province, taking the total number of deaths this year to 102. They died during the course of a joint Afghan National Army and International Security Assistance Force security patrol designed to reassure local Afghans. They were on foot at the time with two Afghan National Army soldiers also being killed. A total of 239 British troops have now been killed in Afghanistan since operations began in October 2001, making it the deadliest year for the country's armed forces since the 1982 Falkland's War.

Clapham Bus Crash Probed

A double-decker bus has overturned, injuring at least 20 people after it crashed into a lorry during rush-hour in London's Clapham. The vehicle toppled at the junction between Plough Road and St John's Hill. The driver of the C3 bus and three passengers are described as being in serious conditions in hospital following the collision.

Tesco Move 'Protects Jobs'

Planners have given the go-ahead for a new Tesco supermarket in Powys, which will help safeguard 100 jobs at a company making ladders. The Welsh move means Lyte Industries, which owns the site where the store will be built in Ystradgynlais, can move to an £8m base in Neath Port Talbot. Earlier this year, Lyte Industries said moving to Baglan Moors would safeguard its workforce and allow it to expand. The company said it had helped to secure its future. Powys Council confirmed Tesco's planning application had been granted.

Council Considers Purchasing Peterborough Grounds

City councillors in Peterborough are set to discuss plans to buy the football ground and surrounding South Bank lands owned by Peterborough United. Talks will be held during a full council meeting on Monday 21 December 2009. Peterborough City Council Leader Councillor Marco Cereste will be asking full council to authorise the purchase of the land, which is a strategic site on the South Bank to allow the city to move forward with its regeneration of the area. The council will also be asked to agree to lease the remainder of the land to Peterborough United.

M6 Death Prompts Fine

A road maintenance company has been fined £65,000 after a motorist was killed on the M6 in Lancashire. Cumbrian Industrials Ltd was prosecuted by the Health and Safety Executive (HSE) in relation to the incident and appeared before Preston Crown Court yesterday. Graham Campbell died after hitting an unlit contractor's vehicle parked on the hard shoulder of the M6, just past junction 35 near Carnforth. He was travelling north on the motorway at approximately 11.30pm on 8 May 2004. Cumbrian Industrials, of The Ridge, Chipping Sodbury, Bristol, pleaded guilty to breaching Section 3(1) of the Health and Safety at Work etc Act 1974 for failing to ensure the safety of the public. The judge deferred his decision on what costs the company should pay in addition to the fine.

Wave Power Plans For Shetland

First Minister Alex Salmond has welcomed the announcement of a joint-venture by Pelamis Wave Power, the Edinburgh technology developer, and Vattenfall, one of the largest utilities in Europe. The First Minister addressed key business, third sector and trade union representatives at the fourth meeting of the National Economic Forum in Edinburgh. The forum will focus on productivity and renewable energy as well as looking towards Scotland's economic recovery in 2010.

Autocar magazine has called on the public to name their best new car of the last ten years. Users of Autocar.co.uk will be able to vote for their car of the decade in the online poll, and any car launched in the last ten years qualifies. Whether it's outright performance, cutting edge styling or genius of design and conception that impresses, the landmark car readers choose will top the voting system which allows users to vote for one of 17 cars nominated by Autocar's expert journalists, or to name their own star car. Average council tax rise dips to 4%
Average council tax will rise by 4% in England this year, the lowest percentage increase since 1994, the Chartered Institute of Public Finance and Accountancy (CIPFA) has reported. CIPFA research predicted that council tax bills would rise by an average £45 to £1, 187 for a "band D" property in 2005/06 in England. In Scotland and Wales, rises of 3.

Record High For UK Car Sales
Car sales in the UK for 2013 reached its highest level since 2007, according to new industry figures. The Society of Motor Manufacturers and Traders (SMMT) said the surge was assisted by cheap credit deals and a strengthening of consumer confidence. Some 2.26 million vehicles were registered last year, it added, which is a 10.8% rise on 2012.

Honda creates 700 UK jobs
Japanese car manufacturer Honda is to create an additional 700 jobs at its plant in Swindon, Wiltshire. The company said that it is planning to increase production from 190,000 cars to 250,000 per year.

Car Sharing Gets 'Capital' Boost
Car clubs are set to benefit from an extra £40,000 of Government funding, Transport Minister Norman Baker announced today. The money will be used to support car club development in the UK - and especially so in the capital, London.

Average council tax rises by almost 6%
The average council tax for a Band D property will increase by 5.9% this coming year, it has been announced today. Two adults occupying a Band D property will pay an average of £1,167 in 2004/5, compared to £1,102 last year. The increase is less than half last year's average increase of 12.9% and is the lowest rise for nine years.
